Why does Serato say your library is in use with another Serato application?
Serato DJ Pro shows “Your Library is in use with another Serato application”, with a Take over Library button, when a different Serato program already has your library open. Nothing is broken or lost. Most of the time it is one of three things: a second Serato app is running (Serato DJ Lite, Serato Studio, or an older copy of Serato DJ Pro), a Serato that crashed or was force-quit is still running in the background, or you opened Serato twice from different icons. Close the other one and the message goes away.
Fix “Your Library is in use with another Serato application”
-
Don't take over mid-setIf you are playing out on another Serato app right now, leave the message alone. Taking over hands the library to the app in front of you, and the other one should be closed first.
-
Quit every other Serato appQuit Serato DJ Lite, Serato Studio and any older copy of Serato DJ Pro you kept in Applications. Serato says its apps all share one library, and opening a second one while the first has it open is exactly what shows this message.
-
Look for a Serato that never quitOpen Activity Monitor (Applications, Utilities), type Serato in the search box, and check the list. If a Serato process is still there with no window open, select it, click the stop button and choose Quit. Use Force Quit only if Quit does nothing.
-
Relaunch from one iconOpen Serato DJ Pro from the Applications folder. If you have an old copy installed, check that your Dock icon points at the version you mean to use, so you don't open two by accident.
-
Press Take over Library only when you are sureIf you have closed everything and the message still appears, click Take over Library. It tells Serato that this copy is now the one using your library.
-
Restart the Mac if it comes backA restart clears any Serato process that is stuck and will not quit. Open Serato before any other music app.
-
Check the library if it still won't openIf Serato still cannot open your library after a restart, with nothing else running, back up your Serato folders and follow the corrupt database and library failed to open guides.
What the message means
Serato DJ Pro, Serato DJ Lite and Serato’s other apps all use the same library: the same crates, cue points, loops and analysis. Serato’s own help page on software compatibility says that if you create a library in Serato DJ Pro and then open another Serato application, you will see this message. So it is a guard, not an error. It stops two programs editing your crates at the same time.
On Serato DJ Pro 4 the library lives in a database file, master.sqlite, in ~/Library/Application Support/Serato/Library. That database has a small lock record naming the program that has the library open. When a second Serato app starts and finds that record held by someone else, it asks you whether to take over. The full map of Serato’s files is in what is in the _Serato_ folder.
Which “other Serato application” is it?
- Serato DJ Lite. Many DJs have it from a controller bundle and still have it installed alongside Serato DJ Pro, so it is easy to open the wrong one first.
- Serato Studio. It reads the same library, so having Studio open while you start Serato DJ Pro triggers the message.
- A second copy of Serato DJ Pro. Some DJs keep the previous version installed under a new name before updating. Serato warns never to run two versions at the same time, because it can cause problems with the library database.
- A Serato that crashed. If Serato froze, was force-quit, or the Mac went to sleep mid-session, a Serato process can linger with no window. Activity Monitor shows it.
Is Take over Library safe?
When nothing else is really using the library, yes. Taking over is not a reset and does not delete anything. Your crates, cues and analysis stay exactly as they were, and this copy of Serato simply becomes the one that edits them.
Where it can go wrong is when the other app is genuinely still open and working, for example Serato Studio saving a project or another copy of Serato DJ Pro writing analysis. Two programs writing to one library is the situation Serato warns about. Quit the other app first, then take over, and you avoid the risk completely.
It keeps coming back
If the message appears every time you launch, something is opening Serato before you do. Check System Settings, General, Login Items for a Serato app. If you share one music drive between two laptops, that is a different problem: see how to sync a Serato library between two computers.
If Serato shows a different message, such as the library failing to open on a drive, follow why Serato says the library failed to open. If it quits or freezes instead, see why Serato keeps crashing on Mac.
Library tools and the lock
Tools that read your Serato library work alongside this lock in different ways. Crate Cleaner reads a copy of your library while Serato is open, so scanning never takes the library away from Serato, and it only writes changes such as merged duplicates or relinked tracks back to Serato’s database when Serato is closed. That is also a good habit with any tool: quit Serato before you let anything else change your library.
Once Serato is back, a quick scan tells you whether the crash that caused this left anything behind. Crate Cleaner lists missing, corrupt and duplicate tracks in one read-only pass, free on your real library, and Library Repair relinks tracks that show orange.
FAQ
Will I lose my crates if I click Take over Library? No. Taking over only changes which Serato app is using the library. Your crates, cue points and analysis are the same files either way.
Can I run Serato DJ Pro and Serato Studio at the same time? Not on the same library. They share one library, so whichever you open second asks to take it over. Close one before opening the other.
I only have Serato DJ Pro open. Why does it still say this? Usually an earlier Serato session never fully quit. Look in Activity Monitor for a Serato process with no window, quit it, or restart the Mac.
Does the message mean my library is corrupt? No. It means another program has the library open. If Serato still cannot open your library with nothing else running, that is a different problem; see the corrupt database guide.
Why did it start after a Serato update? If you kept the old version installed, your Dock or a shortcut may still open it. Opening the old and new versions together triggers the message, and Serato warns against running two versions at once.
