Convert audio for Serato DJ and CDJs

Convert audio files without losing your Serato cues.

WMA files Serato on Mac will not play, FLACs an older CDJ will not read. Crate Cleaner converts them to AIFF, WAV, FLAC, Apple Lossless, MP3 or AAC on your Mac, keeps the tags, artwork, cue points and beatgrid, and swaps the new files into your library and crates only once you have checked them.

Formats

Whatever is in your library goes in, a format your gear plays comes out

Pick tracks by format on the Convert page, search and untick the ones to leave alone, or select tracks in your crates, right-click and choose Convert. Crate Cleaner flags the formats that cause trouble before you start: WMA, which Serato on Mac cannot play, Opus, which Serato cannot play at all, and FLAC, which older CDJs cannot read.

In

MP3, WAV, AIFF, FLAC, M4A, Ogg, Opus and WMA

WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP3, Ogg and Opus are read directly, M4A and MP4 through macOS Core Audio, and WMA and other formats through a decode-only copy of FFmpeg that comes with the app. Nothing extra to install.

Out, lossless

CDJ-safe AIFF, AIFF, WAV, FLAC, Apple Lossless

CDJ-safe AIFF is 16-bit, 44.1 kHz, the safest choice for club players. The other lossless presets keep the source’s resolution, so a 24-bit file stays 24-bit.

Out, lossy

MP3 320, 256 or 192, and AAC 256

For smaller files on a laptop or a USB stick. MP3s are constant bitrate with a gapless header, and lossy sources are capped at their own bitrate.

Preview before converting five M4A and FLAC files to MP3 320: Serato cues and loops kept on 5 files, 2 files capped at the source bitrate so no fake 320s are made

Serato

Cue points, loops and beatgrids come with the file

A plain audio converter writes a new file and leaves behind everything Serato stored in the old one. Crate Cleaner copies it across. When the new file is an MP3, AIFF or WAV, the hot cues, cue colours, loops, beatgrid and Serato’s analysis go with it, from MP3, AIFF and WAV files and also from M4A and FLAC files Serato has tagged.

FLAC, Apple Lossless and AAC outputs keep the tags and artwork but not Serato’s cues. The preview tells you how many of your files would lose cues before anything runs, so you can pick an AIFF or MP3 preset instead.

Quality

No fake 320s, and no quality the source never had

Turning a 128 kbps file into a 320 kbps MP3 makes a bigger file that sounds the same, which is exactly the fake that Audio Quality exists to catch. Crate Cleaner will not make one.

Lossy to lossy

Capped at the real bitrate

A lossy output never goes above the source. If Audio Quality measured a file as a fake 320, the cap uses the real quality it found, not the label.

Same format

Skipped, not re-encoded

An MP3 is not converted to another MP3, and an AAC file is not converted to AAC: re-encoding only loses quality. Skipped files are free.

Lossless

Bit-exact when nothing changes

Lossless to lossless at the same resolution copies the audio exactly. Going down to 16-bit adds dither, and the preview says when a lossy file is going into a lossless container, which plays anywhere but sounds no better.

Review

Nothing in your library changes until you press Replace

New files are written next to the originals, which are never touched. Each converted track waits in a review list showing the old and new format, how many cues were kept, any notes, and the new file size. Discard deletes the converted copy. Replace swaps it in.

The review list after converting eight WMA and MP3 files to AIFF 16-bit 44.1 kHz, with 3 to 8 Serato cues kept on each MP3, notes and file sizes, and Discard and Replace all buttons

How it works

Pick the tracks, pick a format, check the result

  1. Pick the tracksChoose formats on the Convert page and untick what to leave out, or right-click a selection in your crates and choose Convert.
  2. Pick a formatChoose one of nine presets. The preview counts what will convert, what is skipped, what is capped and where cues are kept.
  3. Review, then ReplaceCheck the converted files, discard any you do not want, and press Replace. Quit Serato first so it does not undo the crate changes.

Plans

What the free plan covers

The free plan converts 25 files a month, and only files actually converted count: skipped files and failed conversions are given back. Previewing, reviewing, discarding and replacing are free on every plan. Pro and Studio convert without a limit.

FAQ

Questions about converting audio

Will my Serato cue points survive the conversion?
Yes, when the new file is an MP3, AIFF or WAV. Hot cues, cue colours, loops, the beatgrid and Serato’s analysis are copied from MP3, AIFF and WAV files, and from M4A and FLAC files Serato has tagged. FLAC, Apple Lossless and AAC outputs keep tags and artwork but not Serato cues, and the preview warns you before anything runs.
How do I convert WMA files to MP3 or AIFF on a Mac?
Open Convert in Crate Cleaner, click the WMA format to select every WMA file in your library, untick any you want to leave out, and choose MP3 or CDJ-safe AIFF. Crate Cleaner decodes WMA itself, so you do not need VLC or any other app, and the tags come across.
What is the best format for CDJs?
CDJ-safe AIFF: 16-bit, 44.1 kHz, the same resolution as a CD. It keeps tags, artwork and Serato cues, and suits older club players that cannot read FLAC or high-resolution files. FLAC is smaller, but older CDJs cannot play it.
Does converting an MP3 to AIFF or WAV improve the sound?
No. A lossless copy of a lossy file plays anywhere AIFF or WAV does, but it sounds the same as the MP3 and is several times larger. The preview points this out for every lossy file going into a lossless format.
Can I convert a 128 kbps MP3 to 320 kbps?
Crate Cleaner will not do that. A lossy output is capped at the source’s real bitrate, so a 128 kbps file comes out at 128 kbps instead of a fake 320. An MP3 is never re-encoded to another MP3.
What happens to my original files?
Nothing until you press Replace. Converted files are written next to the originals. Replace moves each original to the Archive, where you can restore it, and Discard deletes a converted file you do not want.
Do my crates, play counts and history follow the new file?
Yes. Replace points the same track in Crate Cleaner’s library at the new file, so play counts and history stay, and every Serato crate that listed the old file is updated. Quit Serato before you press Replace, because Serato rewrites its crates when it closes.
Does it work with Serato DJ Pro 4?
Yes. Serato 4 keeps its own entry for the old file, which shows as missing at first. Open Serato once so it picks up the new files, then quit it, and within a few minutes Crate Cleaner folds each old entry into its new file, keeping plays and history, after backing up Serato’s library.
Is converting free?
The free plan converts 25 files a month, and only files actually converted count: skipped and failed files are given back. Pro and Studio convert without a limit.
How is this different from the free online audio converter?
The browser converter on this site handles a few files at a time and never uploads them. The app converts whole formats across your library, carries Serato cues, refuses to make fake 320s, and moves your crates and library over to the new files.
