How do I delete a crate in Serato, and can I get it back?

What deleting a crate actually does

A crate is a playlist, not a folder. It holds references to tracks, not the tracks themselves. So when you delete a crate you delete the list, not the music. The same songs are still in your main library and still on your drive, and their cue points, loops, and beatgrids are untouched, because those live in the files and the database, not in the crate.

The one thing worth checking before you confirm: deleting a parent crate also removes every subcrate nested inside it. If you have a genre crate with ten tempo subcrates under it, deleting the parent takes all ten with it. Collapse the crate and look at what is inside before you delete it.

Removing a track is not the same as deleting a crate

Serato has two different deletes, and the Delete key does both depending on what is selected. With a track highlighted inside a crate, pressing Delete removes that track from the crate, not from your library. With a crate highlighted, pressing Delete removes the whole crate. Neither one touches the audio file on your drive.

To undo an accidental track removal there is nothing to restore: just drag the track back into the crate from your main library. To undo a deleted crate, keep reading.

Undo it: restore a deleted crate

Serato DJ Pro does not have an undo command for a deleted crate. Once you confirm, the crate is gone from the app. But each crate is saved as its own small file on disk, so if you have a backup you can put that file back.

Every crate is a .crate file inside the _Serato_ folder, in a subfolder called Subcrates (smart crates live in SmartCrates). On your system drive that is ~/Music/_Serato_/Subcrates/; on an external drive it is at the root of that drive. To restore a deleted crate:

1. Quit Serato DJ Pro. It reads these files on launch, so it has to be closed while you swap them.
2. Open your backup of the _Serato_ folder. If you use Serato's own backup, that is a _Serato_Backup folder on the same drive. Time Machine or any drive backup works too.
3. Copy the crate file back. Find YourCrateName.crate in the backup's Subcrates folder and copy it into your live ~/Music/_Serato_/Subcrates/ folder.
4. Relaunch Serato. The crate reappears in the panel with its tracks. Nested subcrates are their own .crate files, so restore each one you need.

If you have no backup

The crate structure is gone, but your music is not. Every track that was in the deleted crate is still in your main library and still on your drive. You have not lost any audio, cue points, or grids. What you lost is the grouping, and you rebuild that by making a new crate and dragging the tracks back in from your main library. If the crate was built on a rule, for example a BPM range or a genre tag, a smart crate can recreate it automatically instead of by hand.

Stop it happening again

Turn on Protect Library. Under Setup, then Library + Cache, the Protect Library option blocks deleting, renaming, and editing crates, and removing tracks. Switch it on and an accidental Delete keypress does nothing. Switch it off for the few minutes you actually want to reorganize.

Keep a real backup. Enable Serato's backup on exit, and add an off-drive copy of your _Serato_ folder, so one deleted crate, or one dead drive, is never a disaster.
