Why are crates or tracks missing after updating Serato, and how do you get them back?
Serato DJ Pro 4 moved your library into a new database, master.sqlite, inside ~/Library/Application Support/Serato/Library, and imports your old library the first time it runs. When crates or tracks go missing after that update, they are almost never deleted. The usual causes are a drive Serato could not read when it started, a library tool that wrote crates in a format Serato 4 did not pick up, or an import that did not finish. Your crate files, Serato’s crate backups and its database backups are all still on disk, so the fix is to find the right copy and put it back.
Get missing crates and tracks back after a Serato update
-
Quit Serato and back up both foldersBefore changing anything, copy
~/Music/_Serato_and the Library folder in~/Library/Application Support/Seratoto an external drive, so every step below can be undone. -
Connect every drive and check macOS permissionsPlug in every drive you keep music on. Then open System Settings, Privacy & Security, Files and Folders, and make sure Serato DJ Pro can access Removable Volumes. Serato notes it may also need Full Disk Access. Relaunch Serato.
-
Check the crate files are still on diskOpen
~/Music/_Serato_/Subcrates, and the_Serato_folder at the root of each music drive. If your.cratefiles are there, Serato reads them when it launches. -
Restore crates from Export BackupsOn Serato 4, open the Export Backups folder inside
_Serato_. Unzip the newest backup from before the problem, copy the.cratefiles you need from its Subcrates folder into your live Subcrates folder, then relaunch Serato. -
Restore the library database if everything looks wrongIf the whole library is off, not just crates, restore
master.sqlitefrom the dated zips inLibrary/Backups, as described in how to fix a corrupt Serato database. -
Re-run a failed history importIf your play history is missing, Serato lists two causes: under about 5 GB of free space, or a corrupt history database. Free up space, quit Serato, move the
com.seratofiles out of~/Library/Preferences, and relaunch to retry. -
Relink tracks that show as missingTracks that moved still need relinking. Rescan ID3 tags from the Files panel, then drag your music folder onto Relocate Lost Files.
What changed in Serato 4
Up to version 3.x, Serato kept its library in a file called database V2 and your crates as .crate files, all inside ~/Music/_Serato_. Serato DJ Pro 4 moved the library into a SQLite database, master.sqlite, in the Library folder under ~/Library/Application Support/Serato. The first time Serato 4 runs, it imports your old library, crates and history into that database.
The old files did not go away. On a Mac running Serato DJ Pro 4.0.9, Serato’s own log shows it doing three things every time it quits: backing up master.sqlite into Library/Backups, zipping the previous crates into the Export Backups folder inside _Serato_, and writing a fresh database V2 and set of .crate files back into _Serato_. When it launches again, it reads those files back in. That round trip is why a crate file restored into Subcrates shows up in Serato 4, and why there are several copies of your crates to recover from.
The common causes, and how to tell which one you have
- Only the crates for one drive are gone. Each external drive has its own
_Serato_folder holding the crates for the tracks on it. If the drive was not connected, or macOS blocked Serato from reading it, those crates do not appear. Serato’s support team documents this permission problem, including tracks that do not stay imported after a restart. Connect the drive, grant access, relaunch. - Every crate vanished after a library tool synced. Tools that write to Serato’s library have to handle version 4 correctly. In April 2026, users of one popular library manager reported all their crates disappearing after its new Serato 4 sync mode stopped writing crate files; switching that tool back to its Serato 3 sync brought them back, and its developer reverted the change. If a tool synced just before your crates went missing, check its Serato version setting first.
- History is empty but crates are fine. That is Serato’s known history import issue in 4.0, covered in the steps above.
- Tracks show as missing, but crates are intact. The files moved, sit on a drive that is not connected, or were already missing before the update. The update carries missing files across exactly as they were. See how to fix missing files in Serato.
What about Serato 5?
Serato DJ 5.0 went into public beta on 10 September 2026. It adds Lucid Beatgrids, which map tempo changes across a track, plus Open Streaming across several services at once, Cue Loops, M3U and M3U8 playlist import, and library protection. Serato says your existing beatgrids are not overwritten, and that opening your library in an older version leaves everything as you left it. See Serato 5 Lucid beatgrids explained for what re-analysis changes.
It is a beta, so treat it like one: make the three-part backup in how to back up your Serato library before you install it, and keep your gig library on a release you trust.
Find missing tracks faster
When an update leaves hundreds of tracks flagged as missing, relinking them one folder at a time is slow. Crate Cleaner’s Library Repair scans your Serato library, matches every missing entry to the files on disk with a confidence score, and relinks them with crates and cues intact. The scan is free on your real library, and the free plan relinks 5 tracks a day.
FAQ
Did updating to Serato 4 delete my crates? Almost certainly not. Serato 4 imports your crates into its new database and keeps writing them to the Subcrates folder, with dated copies in Export Backups. Missing crates are usually on a drive Serato could not read, or were not written by a third-party tool.
Where are my crates stored in Serato 4? In the library database, master.sqlite, in ~/Library/Application Support/Serato/Library, and as .crate files in the Subcrates folder inside ~/Music/_Serato_ and inside the _Serato_ folder on each music drive.
Can I copy a .crate file from a backup into Serato 4? Yes. Quit Serato, copy the .crate file into the Subcrates folder inside _Serato_, and relaunch. Serato 4 reads it in at launch.
Why did my external drive's crates disappear? Serato could not read that drive when it started, either because it was not connected or because macOS has not given Serato access to removable volumes. Connect it, allow access in Privacy & Security, and relaunch.
Should I install the Serato 5 beta? Only with a full backup first, and not on the library you gig with. Serato says your existing beatgrids are kept and older versions still open your library as before.
